Class 3

Welcome to Class 3.

We are a year 1 class taught by Miss Ellis supported by Mrs Smith.

Important Information:

In Year 1 we try to promote independence therefore it is the children's responsibility to put their book in the green basket to be changed. Books are changed twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  We will have PE on a Wednesday and will complete our 99 club test on a Tuesday.

Inventors and Inventions

In Terms 3 and 4 we have been exploring Brunel and bridges, we have been finding out about Brunel's life and his inventions. We went for a walk around Melksham to see the bridges within the area around us, we then sketched and designed our own bridges. Scroll down to have a look at some of our bridges.

In English this term we have been focusing on retelling the story of The lighthouse Keeper's lunch, we have been coming up with a solution to help Mr Grinling. We thought we would use our knowledge of bridges to build a bridge to save him from the terrible storm.

We have learnt about different types of Bridges, and created our own factbook which will include a number of bridges we have been learning about, such as The Clifton Suspension and London Bridge.

In English we are focusing on letter formation and initial sounds, please practise at home when you can as this can be tricky and every little helps.

As you are aware we have a phonics screening check in year 1 and there are lots of resources online to help your children with phonics. The children are working towards understanding and recognising phase 5 sounds.

We are working on our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. If there is anything you would like to practise at home or any resources you might like to support your children please ask!

In Maths we have been counting in 2s and 10s, keep practising at home we are getting very good at our 99club. We have also been learning about writing number sentences using the four operations (+, -, x and divide). This term we have been looking at measurement and capacity and volume.

We still need more practise with recognising numbers so here's some of the ways we have done that, why don't you have a go at home.

In Science we have been learning all about different materials. We know that Glass is transparent and bricks are opaque. We have been using materials to test their strength when building bridges, we have been conducting lots of scientific experiments and testing and retesting our designs.
