Welcome to Class 9's page!
We are a class of Year 5s who are taught by Miss. Pepper with Mrs. Goulding to support us.
Here are a few important reminders for children and parents/carers: Year 5 participate in PE every Monday. Homework is still due every Wednesday, and goes home every Friday. "3 reads", which need to be completed as part of the homework, will be checked every Friday. There are also expectations stuck in the reading log and homework books to help clarify any queries.
We are also incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to participate in Forest School for the academic year every Wednesday afternoon with Madam Milsom! Miss. Pepper has already decided the groups for each Term. However, if children are not respectful, do not follow instructions or misbehave during Forest School, children will be removed from the group and will not participate again during Year 5. Forest School children need to make sure they bring the appropriate clothing for each session otherwise they will not be allowed to join in for that afternoon.
Our second topic is called 'Star Gazers.' This is a science based topic which will have a big focus on space! Keep an eye out for updates.
This term we will continue with fiction, non-fiction and poetry. During our fiction unit, we will be studying autobiographies and biographies. Even though these may seem like non-fiction texts, they can be written as fiction. We will be thinking about using precising word and expanded noun phrase. In our non-fiction unit we will be covering both explanation texts and instructions. This will enable us to write our own explanation text and a set of instructions for a futurist piece of equipment. While studying poetry, we will be focusing on cautionary poems - poems which have a moral. As we will have one full week, we will use this time to write our own Kennings poem.
This term will heavily focus on multiplication and division. However, this is not necessary our timetables. We will using whole numbers and decimals to times and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000. We will use our multiplication knowledge to learn a new division method. Once we have understood the process, we will need to reply on our knowledge of timetables. We will also learn in detail of rectangles and polygons, finishing up with factors and prime numbers.
We have carried out Science alot more this term. We have learned about the planets, lengths of days/years, the moon phases, famous Scientists and carried out investigations. One of our favourite investigation was 'Does the size of a parachute affect the speed it falls?' We found out the bigger the parachute, the slower the parachute falls to the ground. We had to make our 3 parachutes first, then tested each one 3 times. Have a look at the photos below of us carrying our investigation.
Design and Technology
During our 'Aliens!' week, we had the opportunity to design and make 3D models of aliens!! We used our designs to create the aliens using clay. We really enjoyed this lesson. Have a look at some of our work!!
The first topic we are learning about this year is called 'Pharaohs' and it is all about the Egyptians! So far, we are excited about this topic, and Miss. Pepper has already received some optional homework and research about it. 'Pharaohs' is a history based topic. Most of our afternoons will consist of history, art, DT or PSHE. No science this term!! Have a read about all of our fantastic learning, both morning and topic related subjects.
Class 9 have had a fantastic attitude to their learning throughout Term 1, in every subjects. Sadly, we have come to the end of our Pharaohs topic, and will be adventuring into a brand new topic in Term 2. Well done, Class 9 for all your hard work and enthusiasm!
We have started Term 1 with Rudyard Kipling's books: 'The Jungle Book' and 'Just So Stories.' During the first week we explored language and grammar skills, which were evident in 'The Jungle Book,' then used our new (& refreshed!) knowledge and role play skills to write a short narrative, using informal language and inverted commas, similar to that of 'The Jungle Book.'
During our second and third week of English, we used 'Just So Stories' to explore different clauses, mainly sub-ordinating and relative clauses. The stories in this book are very entertaining and explain the origins of animals - how they came to be. We have especially enjoyed reading and listening to 'How the Camel got his Hump' and 'How the Rhino got his Skin.' We are using these ideas of animal origins and the use of clauses to write a diary entry and a short story. We will be writing a diary at the end of the second week, and our story during the third week.
After completing a fiction unit, we moved onto non-fiction. This was focused on aliens and recounts. We read through different types of recounts, including diaries and reports. We also explored the use of expanded noun phrases and used these within our writing of a diary. We imagined we were aliens visiting places locally. Then, we wrote a 3 day diary about our alien adventures.
Observational poetry. During the last full week, we have read different poems and focused on poetry techniques. We have learned about a few new techniques and had a go at writing using these. To help with writing about observations, we took the iPads and went outside to take photos. This was enjoyable and helped us with our writing (a good visual reminder!) During the last few days of term, we have written poetry in the style of Joseph Coelho's 'I am a writer' poem.
We have started this year with a focus on Number. We first focused on 'place value' and tackled reading and writing numbers to 1,000,000, then moved onto negative numbers. Miss. Pepper was very impressed with our negative numbers skill and application! We moved onto counting forwards and backwards in steps to the power of 10, and have used this knowledge to help us with rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000. We have applied our rounding skills to checking if answers are correct or not. The following week, we learned of Roman numerals. Once we understood the pattern and rules, we were able to write and read Roman numerals up to 1,000! Some of us even solve mastery activities!
We moved onto 'addition and subtraction.' We learned a strategy to use when solving mental addition and subtraction, and embedded our use of the formal written method, especially when subtracting quite a few zeros! This helped us to attempt mastery activities.
During the last week & half of term, we focused on 'statistics.' We spent a whole week on line graphs. None of us had drawn a line graph before, so this was our first lesson! We then tackled interpreting line graphs. This was a little tricky at first, but the more we practised, the better we became. The last few days of term, we focused on tables - planning and gather survey data, presenting and interpreting it.
Design and Technology
While learning about Pharaohs, we had the chance to make our own neme, which Pharaohs would wear. This activity required accurate measuring and cutting skills and some persistence! We all produced our own neme and are very proud of this end result. Below are some photos of us working hard, and a few finished nemes.
On 9th October, we participated in a Pilgrimage. We visited 5 different Churches in Melksham. This gave us the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Christian faith, and to understand and appreciate the worship and organisation of the Christian traditions. We were surprised by the layout of each Church, and wanted to find out more information about each Church. During our visits, we had to look for different items in each Church and had to think about how we felt as we entered each Church. There was also many questions to answer in relation to the Church’s practise and layout. Below are photos of us exploring the Churches.
Homework has changed this year! You now only have to read 3 times, practise your spellings and complete a number facts maths activity. However, there is optional homework if you wish to complete which require abit more effort. Here are examples of some these fantastic optional pieces:
