Food For Thought…

I hope you are hungry because we are wrapping up the year and nourishing our brains with our learning dessert: Food!

The heat is on…

Writing:

We have been using Charlie and the chocolate factory as our inspiration to design and describe our new sweets.  Using prefixes and suffixes we have described our whole new range of products that would make Mr Wonka proud.

Maths:

Using our division and multiplication skills, we have been solving food worded questions and missing number problems.

Food...

We have been researching what makes our food healthy.  We looked closely at the sugar in our favourite snacks and found out that some of our healthiest snacks have quite a bit of natural sugar but not much fat.  Many of those unhealthy snacks could have low sugar content but much larger amounts of fat and salt.

We wonder which snacks you would choose to eat...

Although we might not have been aware of the working conditions of some countries before, we are now passionate about keeping the food system fair.  After learning about fairtrade and breaking down the cost of the banana for each stakeholder, we decided to debate what the extra money for fairtrade food should be spent on.  We looked at new water wells, 1 doctor vs 2 nurses; school and teachers, new roofs and malaria nets for villages of a tea leaf plantation.  Once we had decided our own opinion, we debated our ideas in class.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Inventors and Inventions in Class 8!

Writing:

From Fact files to Biographies.  We looked at using our very excellent engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel to inspire our own biographies.  By looking at the history of this British mastermind, we are using him as a role model to create our own inventors.  From interviews to inventions – our ingenious ideas are taking hold, ready for any problem to come our way.

 

After our imaginations had taken hold, the book Ice Palace really posed a problem.  A chasm opened up and Ivan had to use the initiative and knowledge of class 8 to get to the other side.  Not only did he have to solve the problem using all class 8 have learnt, he then had to find and save his brother from the evil clutches of Starjik!  Not an easy task but thankfully, class 8 have solve the case and finished to story using their own ideas.

Maths:

It is time for Mental Measuring!  No item is safe from our measurement devices.

Using our beady eyes to separate mm from cm and grams from kg, we are scaling the dizzy heights of accuracy.

 

How long do you think we can make a piece of string?

 

From devious division to fractious fractions.  The focus is on finding parts of whole.  Ever found fractions tricky?

Numerator – the number of parts we are trying to find               

Denominator – the number of part in the whole amount

 

Eg 2/5 of 30

There are 5 parts in the whole amount – so let’s split it into 5 parts.

30 ÷ 5 = 6

There are 2 parts we are trying to find.  So let’s take 2 of the 5 parts.

6 x 2 = 12.

                  

2/5 of 30 = 12

Science:

We are not just scientists, ready to explore the strength and suitability of materials for Brunel’s bridges.  We are innovative engineers.  Designing our own investigation through questioning, research and experimentation.  We don’t want just any material for a bridge, we want the most creative, sturdy materials for our generation!

Welcome to Class 8 and our journey of Around the World in 80 Days!

 

Wow! Have we got a challenge this term.

We are following the legendary Phileas Fogg and his sidekick Passepartout on their quest to travel the world in a mere 80 days.  The maths in this is really quite astonishing!  After a request from a local travel agent, we have to research how we could travel the world in 80 days with only £2,000 per country.  We will need all our writing prowess to recreate Jules Verne’s novel in our own inspiring travel stories and our detective skills to ferret out the culture and history of each country we visit.  All this will be put together as a package that shows how alive the world really is.

Writing

As Phileas Fogg journeys on trains, steam ships and carriages, our own characters have been journeying on elephants, ostriches and even lions in daring escapades in Africa.  We have been exploring the far reaches of the Kenyan safari parks and have had great ideas for our writing.  By comparing the animals we see by using comparative sentences and superlative sentences, we have found the greatest problems for our characters.

The lions have been the scariest.  We have found cheetahs are quicker than ostriches.   

Our question to you is: are hippos are heavier than rhinos?

Maths

From rounding to addition and multiplication.  Our totals just go up and up.

We have used our addition skills to plan our character's trips in our writing.  We are using written methods to solve worded problems in addition and multiplication - helping to solve the problems Phileas Fogg and Passepartout have.  

 

Class 8 Challenge:

Passepartout needs help.  He has been asked to buy lunch for Phileas Fogg.  Phileas Fogg wants a ham sandwich and a cheese sandwich.  Then he wants a piece of Victoria sponge cake.  These are the prices:

ham sandwich - 300p     cheese sandwich - 250p      Victoria sponge - 475p

How much must Passepartout spend?  Can you write your answer as pounds?

Musical ears

We have been listening and comparing traditional folk music from England and Spain. Using our technical terminology, we have compared the tempo, beat, pitch, texture and timbre of these music pieces.

Class Challenge: Close you eyes and imagine being on a safari. Think of the sights of the landscape, the sounds of the animals and the smell of the hot, dry savannah.
