Welcome to 6H 2018 – 2019
We are a Year 6 class taught by Mrs Herrera and supported by Miss Chivers.
The children (and staff) are feeling enthusiastic about the challenges and opportunities ahead as they move into the final year of primary school.
Over the course of the year you will be able to see lots of exciting information and photographs here on our class page so please check back occasionally to see what we are up to.
- PE is every Tuesday
- Friday 28th September - Cake Sale in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support - donations of cakes welcome!
- Friday 19th October - Showcase to parents – Open afternoon from 2:45 pm. Please come to ‘Hut 8’ to share the work of our resident codebreakers.
A few important things that you can help and support your child at home with:
Encourage and support your child to read as much as possible at home, at least times in a week, with the aim of improving their fluency and comprehension. Take opportunities to hear them read, discuss their reading and book choices and read to them.
Please practise times tables every week. Times tables underpin a child's ability to develop mathematically in all areas.
Thank you all in advance for your support in this.
If you have any questions, or any problems regarding the above, please do pop in and see us and we can arrange an appropriate time to speak with you.
Term 1 - Our learning
This term children in Year 6 has been transported back in time. The year is 1940 and Britain is at war with Germany. The place is Hut 8, The British Government Code and Cipher School, Bletchley Park (temporarily housed at The Manor School!). Under the supervision of Alan Turing, the children are part of a crack team of coders working to decipher the most secret German messages. Wish them luck. Their next mission is…sshhh! That’s top secret.
Codebreakers in Hut 8 - working on encrypted messages
Codebreakers translating messages about the Battle of Britain from and into Morse Code.
In science, children are learning all about circuits. Their final challenge will be to build a simple circuit capable of sending a message in Morse Code.
Can we design a push switch and send a message using Morse Code?
