Welcome to Year 3!

In Monarch class we have Miss Webley and Mrs Goulding helping us with our learning. We have lots of things to look forward to in year 3 with lots of new learning coming our way. This includes some exciting history and geography topics! Alongside this we have some fantastic stories to read this year to help us put our reading and writing skills to the test! Each child will be given the opportunity to take a book home from our school library and a levelled book to read every week but don’t forget to record your reads in your reading record!

Topics we will be covering this year:

Term 2: Ancient Egyptians

Term 3: Comparing the UK and Spain (mountains and hills)

Term 4: The Iron Age

Term 5: Treasure and Trails: Local Geography

Term 6: Ancient Egyptians

Reading

All children have a levelled book and a book of pleasure to read weekly. We ask that you try and read with your child regularly even if they are a fluent reader. Asking them questions about what they are reading to support their understanding of different stories. Children have a reading record to write down when they are reading. We aim for 5 reads a week for children to be awarded a reading certificate!

Spellings

Children receive spellings weekly and have a spelling book to support them practicing these. These are sent out on a Monday and we test on a Friday. Spellings a generally based on the statutory words for year 3 and the spelling rules and patterns that we are learning in our lessons.

Maths

We have lots of new learning in maths this year which will be supported by our lessons and our MOT sessions to recap and support us. We are also having an extra session to help us with our times tables. We are starting the year focusing on our recall of our 2s, 5s and 10s. Children can also practice this at home to support them with their learning in class.

PE Days

Our PE days are Wednesday and a Friday. Children are lucky enough to be swimming this term on a Wednesday so will need to bring in their swimming kits on this day. Children have PE on a Friday so will need their PE kits at school on a Friday morning. Their focus this term is Gymnastics and is taught by PH Sports.
