Welcome to Year 5

Year 5 - Peacock Class

Miss Brown - Teacher

Mrs Blackey - Teaching Assistant

Mrs Burge - Teaching Assistant

We are Year 5! We love learning, exploring new ideas and showing off our skills. We love maths especially and love working out how to solve problems in new and exciting ways. We have been learning to plot, translate and reflect shapes, and in writing we have been exploring letter writing in character!

Our Science for this term is materials and states of matter. In Art we are looking at Surrealism and mosaics, and in Geography we are looking at maps and how to use them.

Our book this term is the BFG.

Home Learning

Children are to read at home at least 3 times a week. Don’t forget to record this in their reading record.

Reading

All the children have two reading books each week to take home. They will have a book in their reading phase and book for pleasure from the library. These books will be changed on Mondays.

Each child has a reading record to take home to record their reading sessions. Please try to read with your child regularly (ideally at least 3 times a week) even if your child is a fluent reader and support him/her by asking questions to deepen their understanding of the text.

Maths

In maths we cover a wide range of topics. Some of the key topics include place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division along with many others. We begin to deepen their understanding of shape., properties, fractions, decimals and measurements.

PE Days

Our PE day is on Monday. Please ensure your child has their PE kit. We ask that children come into school in their PE kits on Monday and wear it during the day to ensure we maximise our time.

A reminder or our PE uniform policy:

PE kits should be brought in a suitable named bag. Please label all clothing with your child’s name. The PE kit consists of:

  • A yellow t-shirt (with or without a logo).
  • Black shorts.
  • A dark tracksuit in winter.
  • Daps or trainers.

Lost property will be available in the parent’s room should any missing uniform items be recovered.

Please can they be brought in on the first day of term and kept in for the duration of the term.

We look forward to working with you to ensure your child fulfils their potential.
